Great Bag March 1, 2010 Marisa Mahabir (Kennesaw, Ga) The bag was a reasonable price and allowed 5 people to travel in a car very comfortably. A roof rack was not needed.
Worked awesome on our CR-V January 8, 2010 TimInChicago (Chicago, IL USA) We bought this bag for occasional (once or twice a year use) for long trips in our Honda CR-V. We figure that if we can use this bag for those few big trips we take, it will help us live with a smaller car than many families have these days. We live in the city and so we also needed a bag that could be stored without taking up much space. This thing peforms like a charm. We don't have a roof rack so we used the included clips to hook above the doors and strapped it very tight. It survived 14 hours through extreme high winds in the mountains on the Interstate during the first part of the trip only to survive blowing snow and single-digit temps during the second part of the trip. It was awesome and is as good as new still. We did learn to find a way to tie the straps off so they don't flap and hit the car... doesn't do any damage but is kind of noisy while driving. I would make this purchase again in a heartbeat.
To the manufacturer, I think you could have used a bigger zipper and I would have paid $5 or $10 extra for that and still consider it a fantastic deal... that would be my only improvement.
Poor Material Quality January 4, 2010 Kevin Whipple (Charlotte, mi United States) We bought this for a trip from Michigan to Florida and then back again.
It held everything fine and strapped to the car great , was very happy.
No rain or snow so it kept everything great on the way down.
When we came home strapped it to the car the same way.
When we arrived home there was a huge tear hole (6 inch dia.)in the front of it.
There were no signs that anything had rubbed it .
It just looks like the material could not handle the long trip.
perfect for what I needed November 18, 2009 Kathleen Cronin I needed extra space to bring my craft products home to FL and decided a rooftop carrier would be what I should get. After reading the reviews of several different ones, this one seemed to be the one I should get and I'm glad I did. It is lightweight, easy to set up and load and tie down. Based on one review I placed everything in plastic bags and I'm glad I did since it did leak a little. I had no problems with the straps or with wind noise. I am very pleased with this product.
We Really Put This Product To The Test... October 30, 2009 Larry F. Rogers (Aplace, MA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Two weeks ago, we decided to go with friends to Yellowstone from MA. Our total trip overall was around 5000 miles or so round trip.
This bag was massively overloaded on the way back because we added two new passengers (Yup, 6, one child, in a Honda Pilot). We had almost no room in the cabin, so the roof bag was essential.
I just put the bag away today after our return, and it still looks like when it came out of the box. I could return it and get my money back and no one would know we actually used it. Of course, I wouldn't do that, but that is how well it handled the trip.
The unit does not "need" a roof rack. It has attachments included for attaching to cars and SUVs with no roof racks at all. I cannot attest to how they work, so you will have to read other reviews for that.
For the price, this product is fantastic. It has some shortcomings, but it solved a huge problem for us cheap. The shortcomings are:
1. It leaks just a tad. We were caught in a rainstorm half way across country. It rained from MA to Indiana. The bag took it OK, but some water did get in. Our stuff was in suitcases and didn't get wet at all. We used a plastic paint tarp to put over the items we had in the bag, and that seemed to direct the water off and out. If on a long trip with heavy rains, plastic should be used to protect your items.
2. The ties that are on the unit are OK. Some folks have mentioned the noise. Yup, they make noise if not tied well. I would think they would make noise on any vehicle without a cross rack. We have cross racks, and fastening to the cross racks instead of the side rails makes them almost silent. So, if you are buying this with the expectation it will travel thousands of miles without cross racks, you may be in for trouble. But shorter trips should be fine.
3. I am conservative and used a couple of ratchet ties to secure the bag to the roof cross racks. These cost about $12 at our local Walmart and support up to 1000 pounds. Without the ratchet ties and cross bars, I think the bag would have slipped back on the truck and the ties would likely have hummed in the wind.
That said, we drove thousands of miles and tracked our mileage. It was not impacted one iota by the bag. So those that say their mileage dropped significantly likely didn't secure the bag well, expected a miracle for less than $40 or introduced other factors (significant weight) to the mix.
We discovered the biggest impacts on mileage were, in this order, non-highway travel, air conditioning and weight. The bag made no difference at all.
We love the product and think it will serve people quite well. There is another product on Amazon that says it is water proof! That may be better for some if it holds as much.
